MISSION & VISION
De Karel Foundation is all about preserving industrial heritage, with a special focus on historic trains. Not just by maintaining them, but by keeping them rolling; because a train that runs stays alive in Dutch culture.
De Karel doesn’t run regular services. Instead, it’s reserved for charity rides: private groups, events, or museum visits, always scheduled with ProRail’s approval.
The foundation also shares its railway license with other charitable train operators. All proceeds (including bequests and legacies) support the upkeep of De Karel, the license, and donations to the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF).
MAINTENANCE
Doing good doesn’t mean cutting corners.
The board runs De Karel professionally and reliably, meeting all railway regulations. After all, without the license, the mission can’t succeed. And remember: standing still = falling behind. Running keeps De Karel in shape.

COLLABORATION
Teamwork makes the dream work.
The Karel Foundation partners with Stoom Stichting Nederland (Rotterdam) and Stichting Hondenkop (Amersfoort). Together they’ve built a strong network, earning full support from NS Reizigers and ProRail, who were eager to see historic trains managed responsibly.
